TEDxToronto
So, not much has happened since last week. Germany won their 3rd place match against Uruguay, which I expected. I'm still kinda upset that Netherlands lost to Spain. Oh well, I've been trying to make myself feel better by telling myself that if Germany HAD to lose to ONE team, of course it'd be to the "best" team. Yes, I used quotations and put "best" to describe Spain because I still think Germany is the best team. :p
The only interesting thing that's come up this week are the TEDxToronto applications. Honestly, when I was reading through all the TEDxWaterloo applications half a year ago, I was so glad I didn't have to fill out one of those. However, now that I actually just want to ATTEND an event and not take part in the organizing or volunteering aspect, I can't avoid the application form. :( Honestly, how am I supposed to think of how I answered A Call to Action within my community?! Gahh. Let me share my answers with you:
Please tell us three interesting facts about yourself. (100 words maximum)
I was the social media lead for TEDxWaterloo (Feb 2010) and helped organize it. I have taken courses for English, Cantonese, German, Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish, and American Sign Language...but only speak English and Cantonese fluently. I own a family of stuffed cows (9!) and cuddle them at night, one for each day of the week and 2 on weekends.
Describe a time you answered A Call to Action in your community. (100 words maximum)
When times were down and all was lost, when skies looked gray and frowns marred faces, I helped rebuild my community. I gave hope to business owners. When they needed me most, I was there. I did it all anonymously though; most of them have never met me. I became the person they needed me to be; I became a shopaholic. :) I also volunteer a lot for Habitat for Humanity through Team Depot. :)
What achievements are you most proud of? (100 words maximum)
Aside from the many academic awards I've won over the years, being a Certified Human Resources Professional at 23, getting my Life Saving 1 swimming badge at 9 although I'm deathly afraid of water...I'm definitely most proud of waking up. I don't just mean waking up at 5am everyday for work...and sleeping at 9pm; although, I do consider that a big achievement as well. Being stuck in a depression for 4 years, I finally woke up at the end of my 3rd year of university. I changed my life around and haven't looked back!
What do you hope to gain by attending TEDxToronto? (50 words maximum)
After organizing and/or volunteering for 9 or so conferences/events (http://www.joannawoo.com/volunteer) in the last 7 months, I've grown to love event planning. I like attending conferences to get a better perspective. What I love even more is having the chance to meet new people and get inspired.
List up to three links that will help us understand you better.
http://www.JoannaWoo.com (This tells you I have a website and strongly believe in personal branding)
http://www.JoannaWoo.com/profile (This tells you that I like to point out the more interest parts of my site so that you have less digging around to do)
http://www.JoannaWoo.ca (This tells you that I care enough about my personal brand to register both .com and .ca so other Joanna Woo's can't have it. This also makes it easier for others since they don't need to remember whether I'm a .com or .ca)
I hope I get accepted! :D Big thank you to Tom for telling me about applications being up!
P.S. Now that I've already submitted my application...I feel like I should've just said that I regularly donate blood for the call to action question. -_- Or that I've offered my saliva to help out some researcher looking to examine DNA of people with an IQ > 130. Ah well. Chapters, La Senza, and Laura only stayed in business because of me, so helping them counts, right? :)
